Adult Education
Our goal is to provide, in partnership with the community, high quality education for adult learners so that they can develop the skills, knowledge and attitude essential for successful participation in society.
Adult Learning Centres are located in 21 communities throughout Frontier School Division. We offer a wide selection of courses to help participants obtain the Mature Student High School Diploma, and other educational goals. Since the programs' inception in 1992, over 600 adult learners graduated with a high school diploma.
Program Goals
The goal of Frontier School Division's Adult Education program is to:
- Provide a positive education experience that encourages further education pursuits and promotes life-long learning,
- Broaden and deepen appreciation and participation in the community's intellectual, social and cultural life,
- Acquire specific skills necessary for personal and economic well-being,
- Offers participants the opportunity to obtain a Mature Student High School Diplomas and/or an Education and Skills Development certificate,
- Provide individuals with an opportunity to gain first-hand experience in occupations so that they make informed educational and career decisions, and increase the opportunities for future training and employment.
The Division will provide educational opportunities enabling people to obtain the requisite education, training, and skills to meet the changing needs of the workplace and to enhance their participation and effectiveness as citizens.
Finding Pathways to Success - Building Construction Program
In 2005, Frontier School Division launched the Building Construction Program, an innovative program which combines and Mature Student High School Diploma with the Level 1 Carpentry certification. The program was developed in partnership with the University College of the North and is supported by Employment Manitoba and the Apprenticeship Branch as part of Manitoba Competitiveness, Training and Trade.
Since the program started in 2005, it has had participants from the following locations:
- Cranberry Portage
- Moose Lake
- Flin Flon
- Grand Rapids
- Lynn Lake
- Wabowden
- Camperville
- Pine Creek
- Skownan
An additional benefit of this program has also been the development of a Frontier School Division Apprenticeship program providing a limited number of apprenticeship positions to participants successfully completing the Building Construction Program. This has provided valuable work experience that can be directly credited toward the hours required for the next level of apprenticeship.
Finding Pathways - Future Development
Frontier School Division continues to seek education and training opportunities for adult learners of the communities we serve. Research and development work has now commenced in several areas that adult learners have expressed interest.
