 English Language Arts

Welcome to the Frontier School Division ELA webpage!

English Language Arts is one of the core subject areas in schools. It takes up the largest percentage of the prescribed allotment of time within the classroom schedule and is the responsibility of all educators across the curriculum. English Language Arts involves six components – listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and representing. These six connected arts form the basis of literacy and communication. It is of highest importance that all of our students in Frontier School Division are successful learners in the area of English Language Arts.

The Divisional ELA program is supported by five ELA Consultants, one in each of the five areas. These consultants provide classroom based program leadership in ELA. In addition, they lead two Divisional projects, the Assessment Project Team (APT) and the Continuum Learning Community (CLC). The goals of these projects are:

Assessment Project Team:

  • involve classroom teachers in creating curriculum correlated relevant assessments for students in Grades 2 to 8
  • develop model units to be used as assessment tools in Reading (Comprehending) and Writing (Composing)

Continuum Learning Community:

  • involve classroom teachers in creating and sharing resources that reflect best practice classroom based assessment
  • develop the curriculum correlated relevant continua for use as a formative assessment tool in Kindergarten to Grade 8
  • develop resources to support the Divisional reading and writing continua

The resources provide support for Charting the Future Strategic Goal # 1. More information for their use in ongoing professional development can be obtained by contacting your Area ELA Consultant.
